Another brick in the wall... →
So, how about this paywall that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp has built around its Times and Sunday Times titles?
The general mood seems to be gleeful schadenfreude at the inevitable demise of the Dirty Digger. Apparently, by cutting off access to content to all but those prepared to pay for it, Mr Murdoch will remove his content from the public debate. RIP The Times.
Not so fast, reckons Peter...

This is an interesting comment on the continuing print vs digital debate. Call me a luddite, but I don’t ever think that an iPad or a Kindle will replace a book or a magazine.
I consume a lot of digital media but I don’t consider that digital media (blogs, twitter, online news or fashion) cannibalises a valuable print product. I have four year’s (and counting) worth of British...

Nice work Hazel Phillips for calling out Next magazine for this bizarre timewarp of an article.
hello internet!
… it’s been a long time since we last met. In the interim, I’ve moved across the world, bought a house and started a new job.

"What is it exactly that's being protected here?" →
This case raises some interesting arguments. That is, if you can get past the first sentence of the article: ”Lawyers for John Campbell and four other TV3 staff today argued in court they should not be summonsed as witnesses”. (WTF?? I take it basic mastery of past participles is no longer a pre-req for a journo job at the NZH). ANYWAY.
The principle that a journalist does not have to...

Conor McNicholas and I have something in common (he would be surprised to learn this). His job has far more cred than mine, but we are both leaving an amazing company having both been part of the push to take magazine publishing into the digital age.
Like him, when I leave this job I’m heading far from north London. *tearz*

Shock news! Ryanair shows contempt for customers. →
Amusing narrative of Ryanair’s tenuous grasp on (a) how the interwebz works (check out their vintage website here) and (b) any passing knowledge whatsoever of customer service.
Hardly surprising from an airline who asks that passengers partially rip their ticket stub prior to boarding so that airline staff minimise any exertion.
Urrrggghhh, which reminds me, I’m flying with them to...

Max Clifford is perhaps not, uniquely, but definitely identifiably, a British phenomena. I love the British tabloids. They are bottom feeding, cheeky, and very occasionally a real check and balance on democracy… working in London in publishing will always be one of the high points of my career.
This interview is an interesting insight into what drives PR guru Max Clifford - not money, so...

Zoom zoom zoom (on the inauguration) →
This picture was taken with a robotic 1474 megapixel camera (295 times the standard 5 megapixel camera).
It’s quite amazing, when you zoom into the crowd, how rapt everyone is on the Prez. I mean, I know it was a historical occasion and all, but I’m sure I would have been looking around, day-dreaming, checking out what everyone was wearing - legacy of overlong school assemblies I...

The state of digital media in New Zealand
is, frankly, roadkill*. Runway Reporter has been stagnating for months, with nary a peep of any new outfit posted on there since late 2008. Meanwhile Metro’s ailing site has been put out of its misery.
I am firmly of the view (as I have ranted on previous occasions) that the only way for print publications to thrive is to anchor a more vigorous website. Looks like this strategy isn’t...

Cheers mates.
The Daily Telegraph’s unflattering headline ahead of the Australia vs. New Zealand one day series, which starts on Sunday.
I am also getting sick of the media’s constant characterisation of Brendon McCullum as a “big-hitting wicketkeeper”. I can’t be bothered looking up when his last half tun was, but it wasn’t in any game I’ve seen...

Check out this great video by Emily Troutman which pulls together a collection of images of people holding a placard naming the emotion which represent how they feel about Obama.
It helps that the soundtrack to the clip is my current favourite song “Human” by the Killers.

I loved this article by India Knight in today’s Sunday Times, describing all the great and good (and not so good) in terms of their very human responses to the inauguration ceremony. I particularly recognised the description of Hillary praying as something I do myself whenever I darken the doors of a church.
The one bit I didn’t like was this:
She kicks off her tight new shoes, like...
